I'm a bit of an introvert, but I love meeting new people and interacting with strangers. My secret? I have a clever list of phrases that almost always elicit a positive reaction from your interlocutors. They can help even the most inveterate introvert to spark a passion for conversation and become more charismatic.

Hospitality

The word "cordiality" balances on the edge of two meanings, "sincere love and kindness" and "formal politeness," representing something in between.

It is easy to show hospitality; it makes a positive impression and sets the tone for the rest of the conversation.

Remember the very phrases you've been taught since kindergarten:

1."HELLO," "HELLO," "GOOD MORNING," "GOODBYE.".

Yes, yes, start with the simplest things, because many people don't even bother with that.

2."I'M GLAD TO SEE YOU.".

I love this phrase as a greeting because it's not just a courtesy, but a courtesy with extra meaning (you can score yourself extra points for "I'm ALWAYS happy to see you").
This will work and when you meet new people, just change it to: "I'm very pleased to meet you.".

3."PLEASE," "THANK YOU.".

It costs nothing to be polite. These words are striking in their absence.

4."AFTER YOU.".

Or any phrase by which you subtly hint that you would like to do someone a small favor.

5."YOU'RE WELCOME," "YOU'RE WELCOME," "YOU'RE WELCOME.

There's a bad habit of saying, "No problem," instead of "Please come back," in response to an expression of gratitude. Using this phrase reinforces a positive response to your words.

6."DOCTOR", "PROFESSOR", "OFFICER", etc..

We live in an informal world. But if someone got a degree or a position with a title, believe me, they've put a lot of effort into getting to that position and improving their skills.
So address the person according to his title at least once during the conversation. Even if he responds, "Oh no, please just call me Bill," he will certainly appreciate it.

Interest

Hospitality is the first step, and it's something that a lot of people can do. But think back to how many times you've been at an event or social situation where the conversation broke off after a mutual "hello"?

To take it a little further, think about what most people like to talk about more than anything else? About yourself, of course. So give them that opportunity. They will gladly open up to you.

7."CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT...".

Tell me what? About anything! Where did you buy that jacket?? What mode of transportation did you use to get here?? Where did you have your best vacation?? Who you are going out with tonight?

Give the person you're talking to a chance to start talking about who they are, what they want, what they believe, or what they've experienced.

8."I HEAR YOU HAVE A GREAT STORY ABOUT..."

Obviously, this will only work if you actually know something the other person would like to share.
This is effective because you let the other person know that you are really interested in what you are asking about and want to know more about it.

9."THAT'S JOHN, HE'S VERY GOOD AT..."

Of course, in this case you have to introduce the person to a third person, and this phrase creates feelings.
You focus on the person, drawing the attention of everyone around you to him or her. For some people there is no better compliment.

Acknowledgement

Acknowledgement is related to interest, but also adds a component to your response. You're not just letting the person know you're interested in them, but you're making sure they've managed to impress you. This removes one of the darkest fears that plagues many people: that we have no influence on other people.

Each of these phrases, when used sincerely, shows the interlocutor that his value in your eyes is great. How can a person not respond in a positive way??

10."I'M IMPRESSED BY THE WAY YOU..."

Finish this sentence any way that suits the situation.

If you know the person a little bit, you can tell they impress you by the fact that they always have lots of interesting stories to tell, or they always eat healthy food in the office.
You don't know him at all? Then you might be impressed by his manner of elegantly carrying his bag and coat at the same time.
Just try to discern something interesting about your interlocutor and tell him.

11."YOU MAY NOT EVEN REALIZE THAT..."

It's like the last expression squared. We all wonder what other people think of us.
Other similar phrases: "People like that you..." or "I'd like to learn how to dress (make deals, be able to communicate, etc..) as well as you.".

12."I LISTENED TO YOUR SUGGESTION AND..."., "I TOOK YOUR ADVICE AND.."

If you've talked to someone before, this will work great. For example, you took his advice, went back to university, and got your master's degree.
And if you've never met before, appreciate his advice to try crabmeat baked goods.
People like to give advice that those around them try to follow, especially if they are satisfied with the result.

13."YOU WERE RIGHT.

Everyone wants to hear that. Take a breath and acknowledge that the other person had a really good idea. Let them see that you think they were right and they will like you even more.

Problems

14."I NOTICED HOW WELL YOU..."

You can build on the key phrases from the previous section: "You're great at... I think you could be even better at...".

15."I THINK YOU CAN DO IT BETTER.".

On the one hand, it is a statement of fact that regardless of the results one has achieved, one has not done enough. But on the other hand, it sounds like a vote of confidence.

16."HMM, I WONDER HOW WE'RE GOING TO DEAL WITH THIS?".

Emphasize solidarity - you and your interlocutor are part of the team.

You can use this phrase effectively with people you know well and work with ("How are we going to get more clients?"), as well as with those you just met at the party ("How would we get to the bar?").

Restrictions

It may seem a little counterintuitive, but by setting limits on what you are willing to do for others, you will make them respect you more. These phrases will help you avoid circumstances you don't want to be in and not promise things you can't deliver.

17."THANKS, BUT I CAN'T.".

This is easily understood by everyone. Thank you for asking me out on a date or offering to go to work on my day off or teasing that guy - I just can't do it.

18."JUST TO SET ADEQUATE EXPECTATIONS...".

I sometimes feel like I use this phrase ten times a day. We often succeed in small projects, but I don't want others to assume that we always work so brilliantly. It's better to exceed expectations than to make exaggerated promises.

19."I WOULD NOT LIKE TO MAKE EXAGGERATED PROMISES..

We've talked about this before.

20."NO.".

Learn to say "no" and act on what you say - it will take you up a notch or two in people's eyes.

Enthusiasm

When all else fails, eternal optimism multiplies. Energetic people infect those around them with their positive attitude.

21."WHY NOT?"

I wish I could sell more to customers in the Caribbean... I wish my boss would let me work from home on Fridays... I wish I could go back to college and get my medical degree..

An enthusiastic listener will ask you only one question: 'Why not? Let's try to do that!".

22."CONGRATULATIONS!".

At any moment, almost everyone can be congratulated on something. This is another chance to show appreciation for another person's efforts, with enthusiasm, joy, and a smile.

23."TELL ME MORE ABOUT...".

If I want you to tell me more, I am interested and passionate about what you say. You'll treat me a little better in gratitude for this question.

Support

You can be supportive by offering a backup or by creating an atmosphere of psychological comfort - it depends. Either way, we appreciate it when people tell us they're willing to have our backs.

24."I BELIEVE IN YOU," "WE'RE TOGETHER.

We all need to hear it - especially when we're not so sure of ourselves. Solidarity is a beautiful thing.

25. "I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO..".

Every time we introduce one person to another, it's a kind of closing of a deal. We assume and hope that new acquaintances will find each other interesting and valuable. We invest social capital in their relationships-it's what people notice and appreciate.

As you've noticed, in all seven circles of communication - cordiality, interest, acceptance, challenge, enthusiasm, limitation, and support - the secret is to communicate a positive message that elicits a positive response. Make the first move, and you'll quickly come up with your own follow-up to these phrases.
